Babolat Pure Aero Team Review

The lightweight Aero for players who want heavy topspin without the heavy frame. A complete breakdown of how the Team trades stability for effortless spin generation.

Executive Summary

The Babolat Pure Aero Team is the lightweight variant of the Pure Aero family, designed for players who want the Aero's signature topspin identity without the physical demand of swinging a heavier frame.

Key Characteristic: At 285g unstrung with a 100 sq in head and open 16x19 string pattern, the Team maximizes the free spin and power the Aero is known for while minimising the effort required. The trade-off is predictable — stability and plow-through against heavy balls are reduced.

Key Positioning: This is a frame for developing juniors, lighter-swing intermediates, or players returning from injury who need a manageable weight without sacrificing the Aero's fundamental spin geometry. It is not a frame for players who generate their own pace — they should look at the standard Pure Aero 100 or the 98.

Performance Profile

Compared to the Pure Aero 100, the Team prioritises maneuverability and spin generation while giving up stability and touch.

Model Context

The Pure Aero family covers three weight profiles. The Team is the entry point for players who want the Aero DNA without committing to a full-weight frame.

Pure Aero Team

100 sq in · 16x19 · 285g
For: Juniors / Lighter Swing

The lightest, most maneuverable Aero. Maximum free spin and effortless power for players who can't generate their own pace yet. Accepts that stability is the trade-off.

Pure Aero 100

100 sq in · 16x19 · 300g
For: Intermediate / 3.5–4.5

The standard Aero. Adds 15g of weight for significantly improved stability and plow-through while retaining the same spin-friendly geometry. The step up when you're ready.

Pure Aero 98

98 sq in · 16x20 · 305g
For: Advanced / 4.5+

The precision variant. Tighter pattern, heavier, more controlled. For players who generate their own pace and want spin with surgical placement, not just high launch angles.

Technical Must-Knows

285g — Who It Suits At 285g unstrung, the Team is at the lighter end of the adult performance market. It suits players with swing speeds below ~75 mph on groundstrokes, juniors 14–18, and lighter-framed adults. If you're regularly out-pacing incoming balls, step up to the 300g standard.
Same Geometry, Less Plow-Through The 16x19 open pattern and beam dimensions are effectively identical to the Pure Aero 100. What you lose is the momentum (swingweight ~300 vs ~315) — the ball doesn't push through on heavy incoming shots the same way. Great for driving your own pace; less suited to redirecting pace.
RA 70 — Stiffer Than It Feels The frame is stiff at RA 70. The light weight reduces the perceived harshness because you're generating less pace, but if you start generating more power with improved technique, you'll feel it. Avoid high tensions (above 55 lbs) to protect your arm as your game develops.
Customisation Ceiling The Team is an excellent base for adding lead tape as a player develops. Adding 5–10g to the hoop (3 and 9 o'clock positions) improves stability meaningfully without reaching full Pure Aero 100 weight. A useful intermediate step.

Who Plays With This?

The Pure Aero Team is used primarily by juniors developing their games and by recreational players with lighter swings who want a frame that helps generate topspin rather than demanding it from pure technique.

Developing Juniors
Pure Aero Team
Junior / Development

The Team is a standard recommendation for juniors aged 14–18 transitioning from junior frames. The Aero geometry builds good topspin habits while the lighter weight prevents injury and allows full swings with incomplete physical development.

Iga Świątek (early career)
Pure Aero (lightweight)
Baseliner

Świątek's early-career equipment choices were in the Aero family at lighter configurations before transitioning to the heavier pro-stock variants. The Team captures the same high-RPM baseline style her game is built around.

Club Intermediate
Pure Aero Team
3.0–3.5 Baseliner

For 3.0–3.5 players who want to develop a topspin-based game, the Team is the most accessible entry point in the Aero family. The spin comes more easily, which reinforces the correct swing path while technique is being developed.

String Setup Guide

The Team's lighter weight and open 16x19 pattern mean it generates power and spin easily on its own. String choices should focus on control and arm protection rather than adding more power. Reference range: 48–58 lbs (21.5–26.5 kg).

Quick Start (Most Players)

  • Start point (soft poly, 1.25mm, full bed): 52–55 lbs — the open pattern and lighter frame already generate good power; mid-range tension keeps the ball in.
  • If the ball is flying long: Go up 2 lbs or try a slightly thicker gauge (1.27mm). The Team launches high naturally; control the trajectory before adding more spin.
  • If your arm is sore: Switch to a multifilament or a very soft poly at 48–50 lbs. The RA 70 stiffness at higher tensions can cause arm discomfort, especially for juniors still developing.
  • For beginners: A multifilament full bed at 52 lbs is a comfortable, forgiving setup that rewards developing technique.

Top 3 Recommended Strings

These strings consistently work well in the Pure Aero Team, balancing easy power with enough control and arm comfort for the frame's target players.

Soft Poly

Babolat RPM Soft

1.25mm
50–54 lbs / 22.5–24.5 kg

Best for: Players wanting the Aero's spin character with reduced arm stress.

RPM Soft's lower stiffness versus standard RPM Blast makes it significantly more arm-friendly in a stiff RA 70 frame. It still produces excellent spin from the open 16x19 pattern with a more comfortable, connected feel at contact. The natural choice for juniors on the Team.

Multifilament

Wilson NXT 16

1.30mm
52–56 lbs / 23.5–25.5 kg

Best for: Beginners and juniors prioritising arm comfort and a forgiving feel.

A premium multifilament that transforms the Team into a soft, responsive package. Less spin than poly options but significantly better arm feel. The slightly thicker gauge adds durability — important for juniors who haven't developed consistent string-contact patterns yet.

Control Poly

Babolat RPM Blast

1.25mm
52–55 lbs / 23.5–25 kg

Best for: Intermediate players (3.5–4.0) who can handle a firmer feel and want maximum spin.

The classic Aero pairing. RPM Blast in the Team produces the signature Aero topspin response. Best suited to players with developed technique who can appreciate the spin feedback — beginners may find it too firm and unforgiving in this stiffer, lighter frame.
